Tendências de fomento a economia local após indicação geográfica da colônia de Witmarsum em Palmeira-PR
The article discusses the impact of the Geographical Indication (GI) registration in the Witmarsum Colony, located in Palmeira-PR, recognized for its production of colonial cheeses. The GI, registered in 2018 as an Indication of Origin, aims to protect and enhance products associated with specific characteristics of their region of origin, promoting social and economic development. The main objective was to analyze the historical aspects of the GI registration, its achievements, and future perspectives, focusing on economic, social, and cultural impacts. The methodology included qualitative research and a literature review based on official documents from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and academic literature. The results highlighted the valorization of local production and the strengthening of cultural identity, benefiting rural tourism and expanding the visibility of Witmarsum’s colonial cheese. However, it was not possible to objectively quantify the economic impacts due to the absence of specific data. The GI also demonstrated technological advances, such as improvements in production processes and quality control. It is concluded that the GI registration brought significant benefits to the Witmarsum Colony, serving as an example of how intellectual property can promote local development and preserve cultural traditions.
