Residential development in Idre – an existing human settlement with potential for a masterpiece. From concept to context: A balanced approach that considers the existing community, natural environment, and economic factors crucial for sustainable and
This is a degree project about residential development on two properties for sale on Blåbärsstigen near Idre village in Älvdalen, Sweden. The project started in 2024 and resulted in two identical houses on these neighbouring plots. To better understand what people expected of a dream house, I looked at UNESCO World Heritage Listed Sites and Criteria. Just like world famous La Villa Rotonda this dream house is completely symmetrical. The house’s structure is basically a timber frame, insulated and load bearing, with openings for doors and windows and a traditional king post timber roof. When deciding on the orientation of rooms the sequence of events, daylight and noise reduction were important factors. Parking is close to the entrance on the north side of the building. On the ground floor there is an entrance hall with wardrobes and gym equipment, a toilet with a shower and laundry, a large kitchen and main room with a fireplace, a dining area, a sofa group and room for a piano. The sitting area has large windows that let daylight in. Spiral stairs lead to the upper floor family room. There are three bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Each room on the first floor has a balcony. A furniture layout suggests an optimal usage of the floor space. When planning for another building, not blocking views from certain windows became important as well as keeping an appropriate distance to the next-door neighbours each in their detached houses.
