Rooted : Exploring ethical symbiosis between humans and plants through interaction design

This thesis explores how interaction design can support a symbiotic relationship between humans and plants through the creation of a hybrid artefact named Rooted. Drawing on more-than-human design perspectives and the biological concept of symbiosis, the project challenges anthropocentric approaches that position plants as decorative or utilitarian objects in design. Using a research through design methodology, supported by traditional user-centred frameworks, the project investigates how humans relate to their plants and how digital and physical interactions can facilitate a deeper sense of connection. The final artefact encourages users to slow down, reflect, and co-grow with their plants in a non-intrusive and ethically conscious manner. Findings suggest that mutuality in human-plant interaction design may be supported through careful, symbolic design choices that embrace ambiguity.
