Quality Assurance in Construction Projects : Collaboration and communication between the design and production phases
The construction industry is characterized by complexity and involves multiple stakeholdersand phases that require careful planning and effective communication to ensure successfulproject outcomes. Deficiencies in information exchange can lead to negative consequences forthe final project result and contribute to inefficiencies throughout the entire process. The purpose of this report is to analyze how effective collaboration and communicationbetween the design and production phases can contribute to achieving project goals, as well asto identify good practices and solutions that can improve the transition between these phases. This study focuses on the design and production phases through a case study of a collaborationproject within a design-build contract, where two subsidiaries of the Rotundagruppen wereresponsible for each respective phase. The methodology includes a literature review, interviews with key project personnel, and a survey targeting several companies within thecorporate group. The literature review highlights success factors for construction projects, theoretical foundations of communication, the importance of tailored communication tools, and the impact of contract forms on communication. The results show that close collaboration and early involvement of production in the designphase reduce information loss and enable more efficient workflows. Communication strategiesincluded the use of an industry-experienced opinion leader, customized schedules, in-personmeetings, and digital tools. The importance of clear responsibility distribution and having theright competence at the right time was strongly emphasized. Digitalization has a positiveimpact but requires continued development and training. The importance of goodcommunication was confirmed through the survey, although it also revealed varyingpreferences for communication channels.
