Prevalence and Pattern of Microbial Resistance of Urinary Pathogens Resistant to Quinolones

Background and Aim: Urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system including kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract such as the bladder and urethra. Women are more susceptible to urinary tract infections than men. The most important treatment for this infection is the use of fluquinolones, which are reportedly associated with high resistance. This study aims to investigate the level of microbial resistance to the most common urinary tract infection microorganisms. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in two hospitals in Karaj, Alborz, Iran. In this study, the results of the culture of urine and antibiogram of patients with urinary tract infection were analyzed. Results: The results obtained from the study of 240 patients with urinary tract infections showed that the prevalence of Escherichia coli microorganism was 45%. The figure for Klebsiella was 40%, while other bacteria constituted 15%. The highest antibiotic sensitivity was reported for colistin and linezolid. Conclusion: Due to the high resistance of common microbes to fluoroquinolones, fluoroquinolones should not be used to treat urinary tract infections; instead, treatment with antibiotics such as amikacin should be considered.
