Perfil de consumo de pescado no município de Manaus, Amazonas

Fish holds significant cultural and dietary importance for the population of the Amazon region. However, improper consumption can pose health risks due to the presence of parasites with zoonotic potential. There is a lack of information about the level of awareness among the population regarding this issue, and research in this area is scarce, highlighting the need for studies to understand the factors considered by consumers. A field study was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 200 randomly selected consumers at the main municipal markets of Manaus/AM during fish purchases. The results indicated that, although consumers express concern about quality- related criteria when buying fish, such precautions are often overlooked in practice. While the majority of respondents are aware of the risks of foodborne illnesses, a small portion remains unaware, relying solely on cooking processes to mitigate potential problems.
