Onboarding without Boarders: A Design Approach for Supporting International Students Globally

Based on personal experience and observational insights, it became evident that many international students face notable feeling of uncertainty, confusion, and unanswered questions during the transition to their destination university abroad. While this phase is naturally exciting and filled with anticipation, it also presents emotional, logistical, and cultural challenges. The onboarding processes currently provided by most higher education institutions often fall short in addressing these needs, prompting students to seek alternative sources of support. This study investigates the common pain points, struggles, and unfulfilled needs of international students through mixed-methods research, including surveys and interviews. The findings informed the development of a proposed digital onboarding application that can be adapted by universities globally. The rationale behind this approach lies in the observation that international students around the world go through similar administrative and social steps which is making a unified, modular solution both practical and scalable. By enhancing onboarding experiences, the proposed platform aims to benefit both students and institutions through improved clarity, support, and user engagement.
