Measurements and simulations for the redesign of SPECTRAP : Magnetic Field Modelling and Resonant Circuit Characterisation

The SPECTRAP experiment at GSI aims to perform spectroscopy of highly charged ions cooled to cryogenic temperatures. In light of the magnet failure a few years ago, the SPECTRAP experiment is in need of a redesign. This work presents a finite element computer model of the magnetic field from the superconducting magnet used in SPECTRAP. This model was used to compute field homogeneity, as well as magnetic field isosurfaces for 0.5, 5 and 10 Gauss. Additionally a helical resonator was constructed and characterised, to be used for non-destructive ion detection and cooling. The resonator has a resonant frequency of around 41.5 Mrad/s and a quality factor of about 200 at the planned operating temperature.
