La representación de la diversidad en las series de televisión contemporáneas: Percepciones sociales ante un contexto industrial en transformación
The article researches the perceptions of Spanish society on the representation of diversity in national television series in a context of major transformations, both social (movements such as feminism or LGBT+ activism are demanding improvements in media representations) and industrial (the emergence of video-on-demand platforms has changed the forms of production, distribution and reception of audiovisual content). Based on theoretical and analytical background on the representation of diversity and how new platforms are increasing it, the article focuses on four social groups: women, LGTB+ people, migrants or people of foreign origin and people over 65 years old. A survey is used as the main methodology, employing Likert scales to measure degrees of agreement with related statements and open text to ask for examples of good and bad representations of each group. Among the results, it is worth noting that there is a perceived improvement in the representations of women and a lack of awareness of the elderly and foreigners; LGTB+ representations generate more rejection. As examples, mainstream titles predominate, especially from generalist channels and Netflix, with frequent polarization in cases of comedies. There is also a lack of reflection on what constitutes a good or bad image.
