Kâmûs-ı Riyâziyât Neden Basılmadı? Hüsnü Hamid Sayman’ın Kâmûs-ı Riyâziyât Hakkında Yazdığı Bir Notun Değerlendirilmesi

This article examines the writing, publication, and republication attempts of Kâmûs-ı Riyâziyât, an encyclopaedic work by Salih Zeki Bey, whose first volume was published in 1898 while the remaining volumes were never printed. The study analyses the content of the work’s printed and manuscript copies. It particularly focuses on a memoir-like note added by Hüsnü Hamid Sayman to the manuscript notebooks. This note serves as a key source for understanding Sayman’s efforts to revive the publication of the work. In addition, the article discusses the later attempts by prominent figures such as Hasan Âli Yücel and Süheyl Ünver to support the publication of the work following the Alphabet Reform. The research demonstrates that Kâmûs-ı Riyâziyât holds not only scientific value but also a significant place in the history of publishing, education, and intellectual life. A complete critical edition of the work is essential for preserving Salih Zeki’s legacy and for giving concrete form to the notion of scientific continuity from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic.
