”Jag vill bara ha det som jag aldrig nånsin haft” : En kvalitativ tematisk analys av rapmusikens berättelse om utsatthet, kriminalitet och samhällsorättvisor

Rap music has long served as a powerful form of expression for youth in marginalized social groups, both in Sweden and internationally. It reflects social injustices, class divisions, and the societal conditions that contribute to crime. Despite being often stigmatized and criticized for romanticizing crime and being aggressive, this study highlights a deeper meaning. Rap lyrics do not solely depict criminal activity but also the underlying social and political structures that shape individuals living conditions. By applying theories such as deviant behavior and strain theory, a picture of the youths' frustration and hopelessness emerges. The music functions as a form of resistance and a way to regain control, boost self-esteem, and create a sense of belonging in a marginalized subculture. The lyrics reflect a reality marked by segregation and poverty, expressing a desire to challenge the prevailing norms and structures that have held individuals back. By internalizing a deviant identity, rap artists can construct an alternative reality and a meaningful place in the world. Instead of condemning rap music as a source of social problems, it should be seen as a tool for social critique, where youth can process their life experiences and strengthen their identity. This study thus highlights the crucial role of rapmusic in raising awareness of the injustices and inequalities present in society and in promoting social change.
