IoT in Structural Health Monitoring : Applying Internet of Things in StructuralHealth Monitoring of Timber structures

This thesis explores the use of strain gauges in Structural Health Monitoring(SHM), focusing on the development of a system to measure weight distribution on specific parts of timber structures, such as beams. The primary objective is to design an affordable and scalable IoT-based solution that can aid future research and assist construction workers in preventing structural failures. The project involves integrating a strain gauge with a scaled bridge model, where data is collected via an ESP32 microcontroller and transmitted to a data visualization platform. This setup provides real-time insights into weight distribution and structural stress. The study highlights the challenges of implementing such a system, presents a small-scale prototype, and explores cost-effective alternatives for SHM in timber construction.
