Film Festivals in Ukraine as an Object of Scientific Study

The aim of the article is to summarise scientific achievements regarding the issues of film festivals in Ukraine. Results. The history of emergence and formation of festivals, their peculiarities and a festival movement in general, which includes film festivals, are researched by scientists of various fields, including music and theatre experts, cultural studies experts, historians, et al. In particular, general theoretical issues of the festival movement, its culturological aspect (as a sociocultural phenomenon, as a fundamentally new dynamic model of modern festive culture with transgressive processes, etc.), the importance of film festivals for the development of cinematography, the history and organisation of film festivals in Ukraine, their main topics, etc. are studied. The scientific novelty consists in generalising scientific achievements regarding the questions of film festivals in Ukraine, identifying their essential features and typology criteria (by scale and geography of holding, as well as thematic focus). Conclusions. It is summarised that film festivals, as a component of the festive movement in Ukraine, are an artistic and at the same time a sociocultural phenomenon. It is a powerful communication channel of film artists from all over the world, a tool for promoting the image of the country, as well as an important resource for Ukraine’s cultural diplomacy and integration into the world cultural space. It is emphasised that, despite all the mentioned significance of film festivals, their defining features, artistic concepts, peculiarities of functioning according to genre representation and regional context, specifics of organisation and priority directions of the film festival movement in the cultural and artistic life of Ukraine, etc., are in urgent need of studying. As one of the optimal forms of modern film art functioning, film festivals are an effective factor in the presentation of Ukrainian cinema, as well as Ukrainian culture in general, in the world cultural space. Consequently, a profound study of film festivals is an urgent and topical need of modern cultural studies.
