Flärkbädd : A remote hiking lodge for learning, reflection, and ecological care
Flärkbädd explores architecture as an active instrument for education through the design of a remote hiking lodge in Sweden's Nätra Fjällskog. It investigates how the built environment can shape habits, encourage introspection, and cultivate a reciprocal relationship between people and place. The project’s context is the region's history of transhumance and fäbodvallar (seasonal summer pastures), a cultural heritage it seeks to preserve through engagement rather than exhibition. The main area of investigation is the creation of an environment where architecture is the teacher. This teaching occurs as the building becomes a framework for co-creation; its sequence of outdoor platforms and elemental provisions invite users to creatively engage and adapt the spaces, fostering a partnership between inhabitant and structure. By foregrounding the essential gestures of shelter and cohabitation, the project invites inhabitants to participate in an ecosystem of stewardship, fostering deeper awareness of their environmental impact.
