Försäkringsbolagens roll för en ökad resiliens mot klimatförändringar : Ett exempel från Halmstad kommun

Today, unpredictable events that have caused property damage are covered by insurance. Concurrently, the urban landscape is challenged significantly by climate change. With rising claims costs and insurance dilemma in high-risk areas, insurance companies are facing an economic challenge. The problem needs to be addressed with climate adaptation, but how society should systematically approach this is currently unclear. This study has conducted semi-structured interviews with respondents from four insurance companies and one respondent from Halmstad Municipality. Municipal documents, as well as literature, have been studied to create a broader analysis. Furthermore, two national and one international example have been reviewed to showcase how potential collaboration can occur. The result defines a need for collaboration between insurance companies and Halmstad Municipality. Both parties emphasize how they can benefit each other. The municipality can obtain support through facilitating knowledge exchange, claims data, and funding possibilities. Simultaneously, insurance companies can participate in spatial planning, offering them a chance to influence their own future economic challenge. Ultimately, collaboration is economically beneficial for society and insurance companies. However, the identified obstacles are difficult to circumvent as they are affected by legislation. Despite this, national and international examples show that collaboration can be accomplished.
