Factores epidemiológicos y clínicos asociados a mortalidad en pacientes con Ictus Agudo Aterotrombótico en Hospital “Arnaldo Milián Castro” en Villa Clara, Cuba
Introduction. Ischemic stroke represents an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Objective. Deter-mine factors associated with mortality in patients with Acute Atherothrombotic Ischemic Stroke. Method-ology. Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. The universe consisted of all hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of Cerebral Infarction in the Neurology Service of the Hospital; the sample was selected through non-probabilistic sampling. Descriptive statistical anal-ysis was performed for each variable, in a frequency distribution. Bivariate group analysis was applied, comparing epidemiological and clinical variables with patient mortality. Results. The male sex predomi-nated (60.0%), patients over 70 years of age (80.0%) and those discharged alive from the Hospital (66.0%). There were no significant differences between deceased patients of both sexes (p>0.05), the opposite being demonstrated in the different age groups (p<0.05). The main clinical findings on admission were: motor defect (94.0%), language disorders (82.0%), and altered state of consciousness (46.0%), being very significantly related to mortality (p <0.01), as well as non-neuro-logical complications (p<0.01). Conclusion. Advanced age, motor defects on admission, language disorders, altered state of consciousness, prolonged hospitaliza-tion and in-hospital complications are poor prognostic factors in patients with Atherothrombotic Cerebral Infarction.
