El empoderamiento a través de la sexualización.: Una perspectiva crítica

This paper starts from the recognition of a certain trend, identifiable in contemporary popular culture, to consider the sexualization of the female body as a way of empowerment. This association, characteristically postfeminist, understands female sexualization as an appropriation of sexual agency reserved to men, an appropriation that, therefore, would subvert the patriarchal hierarchy. The text intends to question the identified association by analyzing critically the conceptual framework on which it is based. To fulfill this goal, it carries out a review of the different aspects of empowerment, which are compared afterwards with what sexualization can offer women; besides, the paper reviews the fundamental thesis of Derridian deconstruction in order to assess whether the alleged subversion actually takes place. Finally, it finds out that the only thing that sexualization can provide us with is individual empowerment because the primary hierarchy remains unharmed.
