Design principles for future preschool building in Uppsala Municipality
The construction sector in Sweden contributes significantly to national greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for more sustainable building practices. This study investigates how flexible and demountable principal solutions can be applied in the new construction of preschool facilities in Uppsala municipality to enhance circularity and resource efficiency for the company Skolfastigheter AB. Using a combination of literature review, semi-structured interviews, and analysis based on ISO 20887:2021, eight principal solutions were developed. These promote adaptability and reuse, aligning with Indicator 12 in the Miljöbyggnad 4.0 certification system. Following this, four building components were selected based on the proposed principal solutions and analyzed through calculations, assessing environmental impact and the costs associated with conventional demolition and selective dismantling. The results show that such design strategies can reduce environmental impact and extend building lifespans, though challenges remain regarding cost, logistics and the lack of standardized working methods to achieve full impact in the new construction of preschool buildings.
