Correlation between Fasting Blood Glucose and Glycosylated Hemoglobin in Patients with Diabetes
Foundation: blood glucose fluctuations in patients with diabetes are a recurring topic in clinical practice; periodically assessing blood glucose levels will be of great help in normalizing blood glucose.
Objective: to correlate fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin in patients with diabetes at a level II hospital in Peru.
Methods: an analytical, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 185 patients treated at a Level II hospital in Peru during 2023. Data were collected using a form adapted from the American Diabetes Association. Descriptive data analysis included position measurements, absolute and relative frequencies, box-and-whisker plots, and the Chi-square likelihood ratio and Spearman's rhodium for correlation between variables, with a p-value < 0.05 considered significant.
Results: the median patient age was 60 years [Q1:50.5; Q3:69; IQR:18.5], with a higher frequency of women (61.6 %), and the median duration of disease was 6 years [Q1:2; Q3:9; IQR:7]. Fasting blood glucose had a median of 198 mg/dL [Q1:148.5; Q3:264.0; IQR:115.5], and glycated hemoglobin was 10.2 % [Q1:8.6; Q3:12.3; IQR:3.7]. Both variables were significantly correlated (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin showed altered results in at least half of patients with diabetes, and the correlation between them was significant for these outcomes. Continuous monitoring of these biochemical parameters and the appropriate application of complementary measures will contribute to more comprehensive control of the disease.
