Міжнародний фестиваль давньої музики у Львові в часи російсько-української війни

Military conflicts, security threats, and instability often lead to the cancellation or restriction of cultural events. The activities of the International Lviv Early Music Festival, in the context of Russian aggression, offer a valuable opportunity to explore how festivals can be held during wartime. Since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the Lviv Myroslav Skoryk National Philharmonic was among the first to resume concert activity. On March 20, it launched the project Ukraine–2022: The Muses Are Not Silent with its first online concert, supporting musicians who remained in Ukraine during the war. The online format became the Philharmonic’s adaptation to the new realities. Over time, both the frequency and quality of the videos increased, as did audience engagement. In 2022, the Lviv Philharmonic hosted three major international festivals. Among them was the traditional Lviv Early Music Festival, which, in 2022, received international status. Its hybrid format—live performances in the hall simultaneously broadcast on the Philharmonic’s YouTube channel—significantly expanded the festival’s audience and enabled new creative collaborations. While the festival traditionally presents a wide spectrum of European music from the Middle Ages to the High Baroque, there has been a consistent focus on Ukrainian musical heritage since its inception. The 2022 edition drew the attention of the international music community and garnered substantial support. Through Ukraine–2022: The Muses Are Not Silent, meaningful creative ties with European musicians were established. A significant affirmation of the festival’s cross-cultural and educational mission was the closing concert, dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the Lviv Music Academy and featuring the Baroque Chapel Orchestra of the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy, Polish harpsichordist Urszula Stawicka, and acclaimed Polish conductor Paweł Osuchowski.
