Композити з VIP на позначення людини в українській та англійській мовах: порівняльний аспект

A comparative analysis of the VIP compounds semantics in Ukrainian and English has revealed common and distinctive features. Names related to socio-economic status, profession and family relations are prevailing in both languages, while other semantic types (general, preferences, etc.) diff er signifi cantly. The obtained results demonstrate the relevant role of socio-economic factors in the formation and functioning of such words in the media discourse. Compounds with the seme ‘age’ turned out to be rare for Ukrainian (they do not exist in the English linguistic space, as well as names with a local seme). Among the general and collective names, the most frequent is the Ukrainian lexeme VIP-person, which confi rms its high popularity in the media discourse (according to the data of the language corpora). At the same time, synonymous names (e.g., VIP-person) are rare. Ukrainian family names for people rank third in terms of frequency of use, which confirms the significance of family relationship in the lives of successful Ukrainians. The study of derivatives with the VIP lexeme (based on GRAC-17 language corpus) demonstrates their diversity and expressive richness. In addition to neutral names, there are stylistically marked lexical items in Ukrainian: ironic (VIP-poor man, VIP-body), aff ectionate (VIP-daughter, VIP-children), which means the active use of the abbreviation VIP to create images and express attitudes towards certain social groups. The study conducted on enTenTen21 corpus showed that spelling is not always a reliable indicator for distinguishing between compounds and phrases in English. Compounds with initial abbreviations (e.g. VIP) are characterised by a tendency to spell their components separately, without the graphene «hyphen», which makes it difficult to assign them to a particular lexico-grammatical category. The analysis of the nouns of the lexoco-semantic group ‘Name of a person’ revealed that a language plays an active role in the construction of social reality. The high frequency of names based on socio-economic features (especially VIP-guest ‘VIP-guest’, VIP-client ‘VIP-client’) indicates the prestige of this status in the modern Ukrainian society. In contrast to Ukrainian, English demonstrates a more distinctive tendency to use polite forms of address in the context of commercial services. The lexeme VIP-gentleman is remarkable since it refl ects the peculiarities of communicative strategies of English speakers.

Abstract

A comparative analysis of the VIP compounds semantics in Ukrainian and English has revealed common and distinctive features. Names related to socio-economic status, profession and family relations are prevailing in both languages, while other semantic types (general, preferences, etc.) diff er signifi cantly. The obtained results demonstrate the relevant role of socio-economic factors in the formation and functioning of such words in the media discourse.
