АРХЕОЛОГІЧНА ПРОБЛЕМАТИКА В СПАДЩИНІ ГРУШЕВСЬКОГО-РЕЦЕНЗЕНТА

The purpose of the research is to generalise a wide range of problems of an archaeological and early historical nature, actualized in the reviews of M. Hrushevsky. The methodological basis of the work is an interdisciplinary approach with particular emphasis on the structural-functional systematic analysis of historiographical facts and the comparative-historical method, based on the principles of objectivity and historicism. The scientific novelty of the article consists in the first special attempt at a complex reconstruction of archaeological and early historical subjects of the legacy of Hrushevsky the historiographer. Conclusions. In the end, the meaningfulness of the archaeological interests of the historiographer was noted. Having gained experience in archaeological work from V. Antonovych, having had a long practice of field excavations, creating such centres of professional communication as museums and magazines, the historian constructed a holistic understanding of the problems and achievements of contemporary science. His vision of the state of archaeology at the end of the 19th – the first third of the 20th century was academically correct, and contained apt critical observations and original proposals. The goal of these reflections was the disciplinary modernization of archaeology, which, according to M. Hrushevsky’s well-argued conviction, was still at the stage of accumulating empirical materials. The historian’s argument in disputes with European colleagues of Ukrainian archaeological interest in determining the types of cultures on our territory also had a considerable impact. This socially important work was a component of his struggle for the academic subjectivity of Ukrainian science. In general, most of M. Hrushevsky’s observations in discussions with his colleagues have retained their historiographical value. Mainly, his suggestions for more thoroughness in the classification of archaeological material, calls to investigate it in the widest possible cultural context, carefully select theoretical and methodological tools, and treat the monuments of the past with care still serve as guidelines for Ukrainian science today.
