The Role of Nutrition in Modulating Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Outcomes in Pediatric Populations: A Review

Introduction: Neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and depression, have risen sharply in prevalence among children and adolescents, creating substantial public health concerns. Traditional interventions, primarily pharmacological and behavioral, offer critical but limited support, underscoring the need for integrated approaches. Recent findings suggest that nutrition may play a significant role in supporting brain development and mitigating mental health risks, offering preventive benefits that complement conventional therapies. This review aims to evaluate the influence of specific nutrients—such as folate, iron, DHA, zinc, and vitamin B12—on neurodevelopmental outcomes, emphasizing the importance of these nutrients during critical growth stages. Additionally, it examines the detrimental effects of dietary deficiencies and the impact of ultra-processed foods and refined sugars. Methods: This review employed a targeted literature search of clinical trials, meta-analyses, and observational studies, synthesizing recent evidence on the role of diet in modulating cognitive function and mental health outcomes. The literature was analyzed to assess nutrient-specific effects and the broader impact of dietary patterns on neurodevelopment and emotional well-being. Results: Findings highlight the various benefits of specific nutrients in promoting cognitive resilience and the adverse effects of nutrient-poor, inflammation-promoting diets on brain health. Moreover, the review underscores public health strategies such as school-based nutrition programs, micronutrient supplementation, and food fortification as essential interventions to address these dietary impacts. Conclusion: This review suggests that dietary strategies should be prioritized in pediatric health policy, given the potential of nutrition to act as a preventive measure alongside traditional treatments. A creative component—an original oil painting, “Nature’s Duality”—captures the theme of dietary balance, emphasizing the interplay between natural and processed food choices. This work contributes to broader public awareness and engagement on the importance of nutritional health for neurodevelopment and overall wellness.
