Second Reaction: Autumn Peltier, Water Warrior
George, is a captivating informational fiction picturebook that introduces readers to the issue of access to clean water in indigenous communities. The text lends itself to young readers through the use of detailed illustrations, water imagery, and personification of water as the narrator in the text.It also attempts to make the complex concept of water access and inequity more approachable to young readers through the biographical account of both Autumn Peltier and Aunt Josephine as clean water advocates.I read this book to 21 children, ages eight to ten.Roughly half of the children are readers of color, and more than half of the learners identify as male. This reading occurred in a traditional public school classroom setting during supplemental reading instructional time.
