Abstract

The fourth edition of Willem Elsschot's Cheese, from 1944, showed a new cover design by the Antwerp graphic artist Henri van Straten. The present article ‘reads’ this lino as a layered interpretation of the novel, that plays with the contrast between realism and symbolism, between material reality and the quasi-religious confrontation with death.
