Soil Microbes
The overall goal of the research project is to discover antimicrobial compounds from soil microorganisms. To achieve this, soil samples were collected from diverse environments and cultured in the lab to isolate various microbial strains. These strains were then screened for antimicrobial activity against a range of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The isolates that showed significant antimicrobial activity during the screening process were then characterized to identify the specific antimicrobial compounds they produce, leading to potential development of new antibiotics. Metabolic testing, PCR and gel electrophoresis were used to determine the identity of the candidate. This research aims to address the growing issue of antibiotic resistance by exploring natural sources for effective microbial agents.
