Incidence de la variation du prix du maïs bio fortifié et du soja sur la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle dans la préfecture de Dankpen au Togo
In Togo, agriculture remains the main activity and the mainstay of the rural economy. One of the special features of this agriculture is that it is practised by small family farms that grow cash crops and food crops, including maize and soya. The GIZ food security and nutrition programme has introduced biofortified maize and soya into households to improve their food and nutrition situation. This research aims to understand the impact of biofortified maize and soybean price variations on household food and nutritional security. The methodology combines documentary analysis, direct observation, individual interviews using a questionnaire and group interviews. Data was collected from 548 households, including 228 control households and 320 beneficiary households. Women’s dietary diversity was calculated using the FAO’s 24-hour recall method. The results of this study show that 62% of beneficiary households have acceptable food consumption (FCS>35) compared with 58% of control households. The dietary diversity of women showed that there was no significant difference between the average number of food groups consumed by beneficiary households (4,2 groups) compared with control households (3,9 groups). Affected households reduce their food intake at the expense of less nutritious foods when the market price of biofortified corn or soybeans rises. To improve the situation, it is important to raise awareness about the production and consumption of nutrient-rich local foods.
