Depictions of God in Supernatural: A Fantasy Theme Rhetorical Analysis of the Series

This study conducts a fantasy theme rhetorical analysis of the portrayal of God in Supernatural, an American fantasy/horror series that aired from 2005 to 2020. Through the characters of Sam and Dean Winchester, the series navigates complex themes, particularly in its depiction of God as a father, a writer, and a dictator. By portraying God’s role as oppressive, Supernatural critiques authority while reinforcing and distorting religious narratives. This study uses fantasy theme criticism to analyze the rhetorical vision that emerged in key episodes from seasons 4, 5, 11, and 15, examining how recurring themes construct a broader discourse on defiance of authority. The findings suggest that the series employs postmodern storytelling to blur the lines between fiction and reality, encouraging audiences to critically engage with religious imagery and power dynamics. Ultimately, this research highlights how Supernatural functions as a cultural artifact that entertains and influences public beliefs of authority, reinforcing the significance of media representations in shaping contemporary systems.
