The Development of a Chest X-Ray Module for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Background: Chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation is essential for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) in diagnosing and managing patient conditions. However, literature indicates deficiencies in SRNA education and proficiency, which could pose a risk to patient safety and outcomes. Moreover, the Council on Accreditation (COA) has introduced new clinical experience requirements, mandating SRNAs’ interpret a minimum of five CXRs during training. Methods: Guided by Cognitive Load Theory, the project team developed an e-learning module that emphasizes the ABCDE systematic approach to CXR interpretation, covering normal anatomy, anatomical abnormalities, commonly placed devices, and differentiation between benign and pathological findings. Results: The implementation of the educational module led to significant improvements in SRNAs’ knowledge and confidence regarding CXR interpretation. Knowledge assessments showed average scores increasing from 31% to 65.4%, while confidence assessments indicated a marked increase in various aspects of CXR interpretation. Conclusions: The CXR educational module effectively addressed knowledge gaps among SRNAs, enhancing their confidence and skills in CXR interpretation. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Goldfarb School of Nursing – Nurse Anesthesia Program (GSON – NAP) to improve SRNA competencies, suggesting a potential for improvements in patient care and safety. The findings advocate for the module’s integration into the NAP curriculum to support continuous professional development, with plans for sustainability through partnerships and ongoing updates.
