Desalination Through Reverse Osmosis Using a Temperature Gradient

Desalination is a crucial process for obtaining potable water, but it is often limited by its high energy consumption. Utilizing a temperature gradient could potentially improve energy efficiency and affordability comparatively to conventional desalination approaches . This research aims to test the theory that a temperature gradient reverse osmosis can enhance desalination performance. The principle behind temperature gradient reverse osmosis will be investigated utilizing a custom experimental apparatus that flows feed and permeate water on opposite sides of a membrane. The feed will be chilled to various temperatures to create different thermal gradients relative to the permeate, which will be monitored throughout experimentation. The thermal conditions are based upon salinity of the water in relation to the temperature gradient required. Key variables, such as the temperature of the water at the system’s inputs and outputs, will be measured to assess the effectiveness of the temperature gradient. The salinity of the potable water will be analyzed by measuring its mass to determine whether an increase in permeameter volume corresponds with reduced salinity. This research aims to pave the way for more sustainable desalination technologies, reducing energy costs and making water purification more globally accessible.
