Unleashing the Potential: A Deep Dive into How ChatGPT Transforms Digital Literacy in Higher Education.

ChatGPT, an AI-generated tool has tremendous potential for scientific writing in higher education. The research question focused on the effectiveness of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool, namely, ChatGPT to complete a scientific critical review paper on psoriasis in the Human Physiology and Mechanism of Disease (BIOC 8700) graduate-level Fall term 2023 course. Methods involved creating an account, and providing ChatGPT clear and concise prompts followed by AI-generated content validation. By cross-validating ChatGPT-generated information from scientific databases (e.g., PubMed) it was concluded that ChatGPT's findings were manipulated and the references were fictitious or fabricated leading to academic integrity issues. However, ChatGPT served as an excellent assistive tool and was helpful in brainstorming ideas for successful paper writing. Overall, this study advances therapeutic knowledge on psoriasis, promoting UN Goal 3 on Health & Wellness, and being a freely accessible tool to advance United Nations Sustainable Goals, 4 and 10 ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education, and reducing inequality respectively. Finally, this experience enhanced our digital literacy skills, and shaped our critical thinking, scientific writing, academic integrity, and improved the overall quality of our learning experience.
