Media Arts Online Learning Environments: Perceptions of Adult Student Learners
Adult student learners have been an increasing student population in higher education since the mid 1940s with introduction of the GI Bill. These students are seeking opportunities to expand their knowledge, increase skills or understanding in areas of interest, and advance in their professions. However, significant barriers surrounding lack of perceived support, inclusive curriculum, and support resources are reported for these students. Amongst this student population, research data support the conclusion that adult student learners have high attrition rates, discontinuing their studies prior to completing their degree program. Further research shows that instructors and peer-to-peer connectedness are influential contributors to persistence and academic success within the adult student learner population. Using a collective-case study design, this qualitative research study explored the experiences of adult student learners enrolled in an online media arts degree program and identified factors that are perceived as influential to their academic engagement. Emerging themes and patterns from this qualitative study may guide future research in online student experiences for all student populations, including adult student learners.
