GenAI-ing Ideas? Understanding Human-IS Collaboration for Creative Problem Solving

Creative problem solving (CPS) is critical for both organizations and society. Generative AI-based creative systems are revolutionizing CPS, but the phenomenon requires better clarity. Additionally, the Information Systems (IS) research on CPS is a bit fragmented. This study meticulously reviews four different streams of literature and develops a Human-IS framework of CPS involving various constructs and assumptions. Using this framework, we explain how generative AI-based creative systems are altering the CPS phenomenon. We use the theoretical lens of ‘agency’ to differentiate the traditional creative systems from the contemporary agentic systems.
