Switching to using Shadow IT in mandatory Technology Context

When organizations invest heavily in buying and developing IT solutions, they mandate their employees to use them to generate positive returns on these investments. Moreover, organizations might place controls and restrain their employees from using IT solutions other than those approved and formally supported by using IT-related risk-management tools. However, some employees might covertly deviate from these officially recognized systems and use different IT solutions to conduct work without the IT department's approval (i.e., Shadow IT).Drawing on Human Migration theory and the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) framework as our theoretical lenses, we aim to study the factors that influence employee to switch from using official organizational IT to Shadow IT in settings where official IT are mandatory. We expect that the research will provide insights into factors influencing employees' shifts from current systems to Shadow IT, aiding organizations in enhancing their IT investments, governance, and strategies.
