The Potential of Digital Methods for Colonial, Maritime, and Slave Trade History in Asia
This abstract explores the digital methods used in the GLOBALISE project to unlock the Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives, a critical resource for studying the movement of enslaved labor in Asia. The VOC acquired the sole right to trade with Asia from the Dutch Republic and their operations spanned most of the Asian continent. Its archive presents a detailed, though biased and distorted version of events and processes in Asia during the Company's existence from 1602 to 1798.
