The Ones Left Behind
Each year, more than 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that at least 135 people are affected by each death. That means tens of millions of people each year experience the complex and often overlooked grief of suicide loss.Yet public conversations around suicide tend to focus on prevention, leaving little space for those left behind. The Ones Left Behind is a 25-minute audio documentary that explores the experience of suicide loss through personal narrative, survivor testimony, and expert insight. It poses three central questions: How do people navigate the loss of a loved one to suicide emotionally and socially?Who gets to claim the identity of a "survivor"?And what does the grieving process look like?Using my own experience of losing my best friend to suicide as a narrative thread, I incorporate interviews with other survivors, including parents, a sibling, and a friend, as well as an expert in examining grief of suicide loss.I conducted field reporting in the Bay Area, with a particular focus on Palo Alto, a community that has experienced multiple youth suicide clusters over the past two decades. The piece draws on original reporting, ambient sounds, archival tape, and firsthand testimony. The project found that many survivors struggled with unresolved guilt and self-blame, wondering whether they could have prevented the death. But by telling their stories and engage in advocacy, survivors began to reshape their grief not as a failure but as a continued connection.Speaking their loss aloud became a path toward healing and breaking the silence that so often surrounds suicide.
