Discovery of John
My experimental research shows a promising new species of bacteria capable of producing a broad spectrum antibiotic. When testing a bacterial isolate I found and named John, it appeared to be able to create a chemical that we may be able to use as an antibiotic. I tested against 6 safe relatives of the 6 ESKAPE pathogens, 2 of them showed zones of inhibition. The 2 safe relatives that were inhibited were Bacillus subtillis, and Staphylococcus epidermis. In addition, 2 other safe relatives of pathogens were tested against and showed zones of inhibition as well. They were Mycobacterium smegmatis, and Escherichia coli. This is very important because antibiotic resistance is increasing. Not only could this potential antibiotic save lives, but it could also provide new insight into the weaknesses of Bacillus subtillis, Staphylococcus epidermis, Mycobacterium smegmatis, and Escherichia coli.
