Integrating AI into Inquiry-Based Learning

This research explores how generative AI tools can be integrated in each phase of the 5E Instruction Model (Bybee et al., 2006), which is based on inquiry-based learning. The core idea of inquiry-based learning is to shift from teacher-centered instruction to inquiry-driven approaches that enhance engagement, a crucial factor in quantitative problem-solving. We adapt the 5E Instruction Model (Bybee et al., 2006) to teach analytics concepts. The “5E” model represents five phases of instruction: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration and evaluation. With the rapid development and widespread adoption of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Co-Pilot, we seek to explore their potential role within the framework of inquiry-based learning and the 5E instructional model. While it is difficult to replace the role of an instructor, we believe that properly integrated AI tools can play an important supplemental role. While we are optimistic about incorporating AI in education, we also acknowledge its concerns, such as hindering the development of critical thinking and creativity essential for higher-order cognitive processes (Valcea et al. 2024). When thoughtfully integrated, AI can enhance inquiry-based learning, foster deeper engagement, and strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills. At the conference, we will present examples of AI’s supplemental roles in the implementation of the 5E model in teaching.
