A method is developed for the synthesis of fluorinated aromatic polyazomethine (FPAM). This is achieved through the reaction of decafluorobiphenyl with para-/meta-substituted azomethine-containing phenolic monomer via an aromatic nucleophilic substitution mechanism, using K2CO3 as a base. The resulting polymer is characterized by good solubility in highly polar aprotic solvents and in chloroform, from which it forms mechanically stable films. The chemical structure of FPAM is investigated by means of FTIR, UV, 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy techniques. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction data demonstrates that the polymer possesses an amorphous structure. A distinctive feature of FPAM is the presence of two glass transition temperatures (according DSC), indicative of the formation of both more mobile and rigid phases within its structure. The polymer demonstrates notable thermo-oxidative stability, with a T5% of 355°C, making it a promising material for further study in the fields of electro-optics and photonics.
