Мистецтво як зброя: творчість композиторки Богдани Фроляк часів російськоукраїнської війни
The works of Bohdana Frolyak composed during 2022–2023 are introduced into the scientific circulation of Ukrainian musicology: the programmatic symphonic compositions The Way, Let There Be Light, Cello and Oboe Instrumental Concertos, music for the theatrical performance The War that Changed Rondo. It was revealed that the figurative content and themes of the composer’s wartime works are extremely broad, ranging from intimate lyrics, memories of the beautiful past and reminders of the beauty of the world to anxious moods, reflections on death, grief, mourning for the dead, and prayer. Many of B. Frolyak’s works offer imaginary scenarios of overcoming the enemy and bringing about the victory for Ukraine through the symbolic victory of light over darkness in the sound continuum. Analytical observations of B. Frolyak’s latest works enable making a generalization regarding her musical aesthetics and main features of her style. The composer uses such musical and expressive means as dramatization of timbres, meditative aesthetics, genre specificity of individual parts of the requiem, tonal and atonal writing, aleatorics, sonoristics, advanced performance techniques, etc. The distinctive features of B. Frolyak’s postmodern worldview are the presence in her works of elements of different eras and styles from Baroque to Impressionism, allusions to the music of W. A. Mozart, V. Sylvestrov, etc. It is emphasized that the main goal of Ukrainian art during the war is to establish the Ukrainian cultural identity and stimulate the interest of the European and world community in Ukraine through active cultural diplomacy, and this is the goal of the leading Ukrainian composers, including Bohdan Frolyak.
