Neo-modernism in the architecture of Lviv in the early twenty-first century represents a complex and evolving phenomenon that emerges at the intersection of reinterpreted modernist principles and the broader socio-cultural changes characteristic of post-socialist and post-postmodern contexts. This study aims to illuminate the defining features of Lviv’s neo-modernist architecture, focusing on its transition from strictly functionalist doctrines to more context-sensitive and user-oriented design strategies. The investigation highlights how neo-modernist buildings in Lviv draw inspiration from classic modernism’s clarity of form and dedication to rationality, yet depart from the utopian and purely functionalist narratives of the early twentieth century. Instead, they integrate a nuanced awareness of local traditions, contemporary social realities, and the global architectural discourse shaped by digital technologies, ecological concerns, and cultural hybridization. A key dimension of neo-modernism in Lviv arises from the city’s historical fabric, which includes layers of architectural heritage ranging from Art Nouveau and interwar functionalism to Soviet-era styles. This stratification, together with the reshaping of professional education and openness to international experience, stimulates architects to adapt modernist aesthetics to contemporary needs. As a result, projects in Lviv often embody simpler facades defined by clean lines and balanced volumes, while selectively incorporating new materials and subtle ornamental accents that reflect modern standards of comfort, sustainability, and cultural identity. These design approaches generally avoid overt historicizing quotes or ironic playfulness, distinguishing themselves from postmodern trends, yet retain the fundamental aspiration for clarity and functional efficiency, hallmark traits of modernist thought. The relevance of neo-modernist architecture for Lviv’s urban development extends beyond stylistic preferences, revealing broader social, technological, and cultural transformations. By contextualizing architectural designs within rapidly shifting market dynamics, emerging lifestyle patterns, and an evolving civic consciousness, neo-modernism exemplifies how historic cities can mediate between global design currents and local cultural continuity. In doing so, it provides valuable insight into the ways contemporary architectural expression can reconcile the legacies of modernism with the diversified, often fluid realities of the present day. This research offers a foundation for further academic inquiry, serving as a stepping stone toward establishing a refined conceptual apparatus and methodological framework that can deepen understanding of neo-modernist phenomena in other urban environments regionally and worldwide.
