In modern international law, the direction of protection against manifestations of gender inequality occupies one of the key places. Member States of the United Nations have made significant efforts to form a regulatory framework aimed at ensuring gender equality and eliminating all forms of discrimination against women. As a result, gender legislation has been formed at the international level, which includes more than 30 conventions, treaties, protocols. which ensure the protection of women’s rights in political, economic, social, cultural and other spheres of public life. Thanks to these efforts, the international community has created a strong legal foundation for the protection and promotion of women’s rights on a global scale. The purpose of this article is to study the formation of international gender legislation in terms of protecting women’s rights. The genesis of international gender legislation in terms of protecting women’s rights can be divided into 5 stages. The formation of legislation at each stage was influenced by the development of society at a particular time. Thus, the first stage is characterized by a gradual movement towards understanding the need to separate and consolidate norms for preventing gender discrimination, and the formation of a separate direction for the protection of women’s rights. The second stage is marked by the adoption of one of the most important documents of humanity, which influenced the formation of all international legislation - the UN Charter. The principles enshrined in the UN Charter created the prerequisites for the development and implementation of a number of conventions on the prevention of discrimination against women. The most important achievement of the third stage was the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The principles of this convention determined the further development of international gender legislation in terms of the protection of women’s rights. The fourth stage formed key international documents that became the basis of global policy in the field of ensuring women’s rights and gender equality. The goal of the fifth stage is to improve legislation adopted before the beginning of the 21st century, including taking into account the impact of new technologies on the protection of human rights, including the protection of women’s rights.
