Towards Sustainable Doctoral Education: Policy Insights and Best Practices for Phd by Publication

Introduction: The advent of the PhD by publication has introduced a paradigm shift in doctoral education, aligning academic research with contemporary dissemination practices. Despite its growing popularity, this format presents unique challenges and opportunities concerning the sustainability of doctoral education practices. This study scrutinizes the sustainability of PhD programs by publication within the framework of global academic policy. Research significance and purpose: The sustainability of doctoral education is critical, not only in environmental terms but also in ensuring economic feasibility, ethical integrity, and social inclusivity. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the current state of PhD by publication programs and propose a framework for enhancing their sustainability. This study addresses the gap in literature concerning the structured analysis of sustainability in these programs and aims to contribute to the development of more robust, fair, and ecologically responsible doctoral training models. Methodology: Employing a discursive review, this research analyses policies from a diverse range of universities globally that offer PhD by publication. The methodology involves thematic analysis to identify common practices and variations in sustainability approaches within these programs. This review not only scrutinizes written policies but also engages with academic literature to understand broader impacts and perceptions. Results: The results reveal significant variability in how institutions handle the sustainability aspects of PhD by publication programs. While some universities embed strong support systems and ethical guidelines, others show gaps in resources allocation and sustainability integration. Notably, the research identifies a lack of standardization in sustainable practices, which impacts the equity and environmental integrity of doctoral education. Discussion (Findings and Implications): The discussion explores the implications of the findings in light of existing sustainability frameworks and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It examines how the identified best practices can be generalized and adapted across different institutional contexts to enhance the global sustainability of PhD education. Additionally, the discussion highlights the role of transdisciplinary approaches in enriching these programs, promoting broader ecological awareness, and fostering ethical research conduct. Conclusions (Managerial and Policy Implications, Future research directions): This study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive integration of sustainability into PhD by publication programs. It recommends the adoption of standardized sustainable practices, including enhanced resource efficiency, support for mental and physical well-being, and equitable access to doctoral education. By fostering a sustainable doctoral education framework, institutions can contribute more effectively to the global sustainability agenda, preparing scholars who are not only academically proficient but also socially and environmentally responsible. This research calls for a concerted effort among global academic communities to reform doctoral policies, ensuring that sustainability becomes a cornerstone of doctoral education worldwide.
