Status of the White-winged Parakeet (<em>Brotogeris versicolurus</em>) in Southeast Florida

Native to South America, White-winged Parakeets (Brotogeris versicolurus) are a popular cage bird formerly exported from Peru in large numbers.Beginning in the 1960s, feral populations formed in southeast Florida, where their population has experienced both growth and decline throughout the years.I examined their population trends since 2000 with data from eBird, iNaturalist, and the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Counts. Results from all datasets indicate a sharp decline of parakeets in 2020 with no observations after 2019 numbering higher than 20 individuals and less than 30 separate eBird sightings per year. This indicates a likely extirpation from Florida with any recent reports probably pertaining to escaped birds rather than remnants of the former feral parakeet population.
