In order to produce a qualitative research, it is necessary to follow certain methodological steps before, during and even after starting the research. When starting the research, determining the most appropriate method for the purpose of the study and the data collection techniques to be used are among the basic steps of this process. In qualitative research, determining an approach or, in other words, the research design is of great importance in terms of determining the integrity and direction of the research. Research design provides a strategic plan that includes the goal of a research and the data collection, analysis and interpretation techniques to be used to achieve this goal, and can also be called research design, research plan, research strategy or “the formal basis of the research goal and flow” (Mayring, 2000: 30). Frequently used research designs in qualitative research include case study, document-based research, life story, oral history, action research, grounded theory, phenomenology and ethnography. In this study, ethnography is discussed as a qualitative research design; The main features of the ethnographic approach, its historical context, purpose, types, stages followed in the research process, data collection sources and advantages and disadvantages are emphasized. Ethnography has an important place in qualitative research, especially in terms of providing an in-depth understanding of social and cultural contexts. In this respect, it provides researchers with rich data from an interdisciplinary perspective.
