Matematikte Başarıya Giden Yol: Türkiye'nin TIMSS 2023 Performansı Üzerine Değişkenlerin Etkisi
This study aims to analyze the variables affecting Turkey's TIMSS 2023 mathematics performance. Using TIMSS 2023 data, the factors influencing the mathematics achievement of 4th-grade students (5th grade students participated), originating from student, family, school, and teacher characteristics, were examined. In this research, conducted with the document analysis method, TIMSS reports and relevant literature were reviewed. The findings revealed that Turkey made significant progress in mathematics in TIMSS 2023, showing the highest score increase among OECD countries. It was determined that male students scored higher than female students, socioeconomic status affected achievement, but significant improvements were observed in disadvantaged groups as well. Increased participation in preschool education, disciplined school environments, a sense of belonging to school, and low absenteeism rates were found to positively affect achievement. Additionally, it was found that peer bullying negatively affected achievement, while the comprehensibility of mathematics instruction and students' self-confidence levels were positively related to achievement. In light of these findings, recommendations such as implementing programs supporting gender equality, increasing socioeconomic support, continuing investments in preschool education, improving school environments, and reducing absenteeism were presented. This study aims to contribute to policies and practices aimed at increasing Turkey's international mathematics achievement.
