Evaluating the Stereochemical Influence of L-Alanine and D-Alanine on Antimicrobial Efficacy
This study will explore the effects of stereochemistry on antimicrobial properties in alanine enantiomers. The stereochemical differences between l-alanine and d-alanine will be evaluated and compared for their biological interactions in antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial effects of the two amino acids will be tested on E coli samples, a gram-negative bacterium, to investigate their potential for future use in antibacterial drug development. The results are expected to reveal a stronger inhibitory effect in D-alanine due to it’s involvement in peptidoglycan biosynthesis, a polymer that forms the bacterial cell wall and a critical target for antimicrobial agents. This research contributes to the understanding of amino acid stereoisomerism in antimicrobial activity and emphasizes the potential of D-alanine as a candidate for further development as a therapeutic agent.
