Developing generative AI case studies

As generative AI (GenAI) tools become increasingly prevalent in higher education, it is crucial for institutions to provide guidance on their effective and responsible use. This project is commissioned by UoB’s Educational Enhancement Fund; the project team is a collaborative partnership between academics, digital education learning designers, and student interns.
The main purpose is to capture examples of GenAI application and share practice across UoB through a two-phase approach. First, an online survey is distributed to identify academics experimenting (or looking to experiment) with GenAI in their teaching, learning, assessment or support practices. Respondents willing to share their experiences in more depth are invited for follow-up conversations with project team members.
Thematic analysis is conducted on the data to reveal valuable insights into the opportunities, challenges, and strategies employed when leveraging GenAI. Quantitative analysis of the data and case studies collected can highlight trends in GenAI adoption, perceived benefits, and training needs across our University. Then, the qualitative data is to be synthesised into a series of case studies exemplifying creative GenAI applications across disciplines.
A transferable framework, dedicated to GenAI educational practices, will be developed to share the outputs of the project internally, with multi-media case study entries comprising written accounts, videos, downloadable resources, and links to generative tools/models used. Selected high-impact cases demonstrating UoB’s leadership in responsible and ethical GenAI practices will be prepared for external dissemination. This resource aims to inspire and provide pragmatic guidance for other institutions navigating the GenAI educational landscape.
