Structural fuse-based segmentation for limiting disproportionate building collapse: design requirements

[EN] Our changing world exposes buildings to extreme events, causing localised failure that can spread and lead to a larger collapse. Existing standards and solutions focused solely on continuity that might be ineffective for extreme scenarios with large initial failures. This article presents a novel approach that combines continuity and segmentation called "fuse-based segmentation philosophy", taking advantage of the benefits of each. By subjecting a building to column losses through computational modelling, we can understand the behaviour of the building and ensure safety by allowing continuity in case of minor failures and segmentation in case of major collapses. Different failures are investigated to increase our understanding of the phenomenon, and various structural fuses are explored to prevent building col- lapses.
