Public perception of mission-oriented innovation policy at the local level in Switzerland

Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP) aims to address complex societal challenges by mobilizing public, private, and societal resources toward transformative goals. While research has largely focused on national and supranational levels, this study investigates public perceptions of MOIP in Swiss municipalities. Based on a survey of 1,000 respondents, findings reveal that MOIP is generally well-received but shows uneven acceptance across demographic groups, with older, wealthier, and better-educated individuals exhibiting greater support. Trust in municipal institutions and interaction with public administration significantly enhance acceptance, while public administration employees demonstrate lower support than other sectors. Using a local governance perspective, this paper highlights the importance of trust, engagement, empowerment, and inclusivity in advancing MOIP at the municipal level.
